Do you daydream about what would life be like...

Do you daydream about what life would be like if you did not have severe chronic pain?

A question was posed recently, “Do you ever daydream about what would life be like if we did not have severe chronic pain?” My answer was, “No.”

I don’t think about it. I learned a long time ago that it was self-destructive. I have had severe chronic pain for so long that I don’t remember what life was like before it. I like my life – love it in fact. Do I love the pain? No. Do I wish I didn’t have to go through it? Yes. I believe I am stronger than I would have been without it, and I am who I am because of – and in spite of - the pain.

I believe that every one of us, to an extent, can choose our responses to pain. For a good part of my life, I was very, very miserable with the pain of migraine. Then I arrived at a crossroads: it was time to accept the fact that I had a condition that was not likely to go away. I had two choices: I could be in pain, miserable and spreading that misery to others – OR – I could be in pain and choose to be happy, spreading that happiness to others. Since I was going to be in pain either way, I chose happiness. It felt much better than misery.
